Introduction
Of all the races Altrincham Athletic Club organise, the Dunham Massey Park 5km is the most recent addition to the fixture calendar. First held in 2002, the race proved a success and looks set to become a long standing event.
Held within the grounds of the beautiful Dunham Massey Park, the race starts in front of the remarkable Dunham Massey - a stunning early Georgian house. The surroundings are quite magnificent and it is an idyllic venue for running.
This race is a rarity in that it is run over National Trust grounds and it is thanks to the negotiating skills of the club committee that it is possible to stage a race within the grounds of the park. We therefore ask that runners do not jeopardise future stagings of this race in any way. In particular, please use the toilets provided in the park and please show consideration to any members of the public using the park.
To get there, exit M56 at junction 7 (signposted A556, M6, Altrincham). Then when you get to the roundabout at the end of the slip road, take the exit signposted A56 Altrincham/Dunham Massey. Do not take the A56 to Lymm!! Turn left onto the B5160 (see map). The main car park is on your left soon after.
The Course
The course runs entirely within the grounds of Dunham Massey Park and runs over a variety of terrain. The route is generally flat and any off-road sections allow fast running. The course is suitable for all, complete beginner or experienced racer, but has proved particularly popular with women who have commented how much safer they feel running in a park than on roads.
The course has been measured and certified as an accurate 5km distance by an official North of England AA course measurer.
Altrincham are organising a 5km grand prix series in conjunction with Spectrum Striders. The two Dunham Massey Park 5km races will be the first and fourth races in the series and will be held on Friday 23rd May 2008 at 7:15pm and Friday 13th June 2008 at 7:15pm.
